USM Alger Saved from Relegation, Eyes Redemption in CAF Champions League
USM Alger narrowly avoided a disastrous relegation this season in the Algerian Ligue 1, securing their top-flight status only on the final day of the championship. Despite domestic struggles, the Red and Blacks managed to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League, offering a chance to redeem themselves on the continental stage.
One of the few standout performers this season has been midfielder Hocine El-Orfi, whose consistent displays earned him a regular place in the starting lineup. In an interview with Le Buteur, El-Orfi shared his thoughts on the club’s difficult campaign:
“From the start, our ambitions were clear — we aimed to retain the title we won a year ago. But fate had other plans, and we found ourselves fighting for survival. Of course, we were disappointed, as we had hoped for better. Still, the most important thing is that we managed to save the club. We must learn from this season to avoid repeating the same mistakes.”
Looking ahead to the CAF Champions League, El-Orfi remains optimistic:
“All clubs begin with equal chances. It’s up to us to manage our matches properly and seize every opportunity. The games won’t be easy, but we are determined to represent USMA and Algerian football with pride.”
As they turn their focus to continental competition, USM Alger will hope that the lessons learned from a turbulent domestic season can fuel a stronger showing in Africa.
