2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Postponed to Late November in Cameroon
The 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), originally scheduled for October 8 to 22, has been postponed to November 19 through December 3. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the date change following discussions with Cameroonian officials.
The decision came after a meeting between a delegation from Cameroon — including the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation’s Normalization Committee, the Minister of Sports, and the Cameroonian Ambassador to Switzerland — and members of CAF’s Executive Committee.
Cameroon raised concerns over the timing of the tournament coinciding with a period of heavy rainfall, which posed significant risks to the playing conditions and overall success of the competition.
CAF acknowledged these concerns and agreed to push back the tournament start date by over a month to avoid the rainy season, ensuring better conditions for players and fans alike.
The rescheduled tournament will still be hosted in Cameroon, offering Africa’s best women footballers an opportunity to compete in optimal conditions and showcase their talents on the continental stage.
