Claude Le Roy Trims Congo U-23 Squad Ahead of African Nations Championship
Congo’s U-23 national team coach Claude Le Roy has taken another step in finalising preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2015, set to be held in Senegal, by trimming his provisional squad from 33 to 28 players.
The seasoned French tactician, known for his deep experience across African football, is methodically shaping his squad as the Diablotins gear up for the continental tournament, which is reserved exclusively for players active in domestic leagues.
While the updated list has been released, not all selected players have reported to camp. A handful of locally-based players are currently unavailable due to commitments with their clubs participating in CAF Confederation Cup matches.
The current squad reflects a blend of domestic talent and Europe-based professionals, with notable inclusions such as Christoffer Mafoumbi in goal, Miangué Senna of Inter Milan, and Phitzgerald Mbaka from Getafe.
Several players from AC Léopards de Dolisie, including Kader Bidimbou, Wisdom Babele, and Carof Bakoua, feature prominently, underlining the club’s strong influence on the national setup. Meanwhile, Julsy Boukama-Kaya (Recreativo, Angola) and Silvère Ganvoula Mboussy (Raja Casablanca) bring valuable international experience.
Congo U-23 Squad (28-man shortlist):
Goalkeepers: Christoffer Henri Mafoumbi, Pavelh Ndzila
Defenders: Moïse Nkounkou, Joe Ombandza, Constantin Chris Bakaki, Mamic Grace Itoua, Cosme Andrely Mavoungou, Romaric Etou
Midfielders: Randy Goteni (Troyes), Bel-Durel Avounou, Charlevy Mabiala (Auxerre), Marvel Ndockyt, Durand Makanga, Noël Christ Mokouka, Made Planned Kaya
Forwards: Bersyl Obassi, Saira Issambet Gassama, Julsy Boukama-Kaya, Varel Rozan, Mavis Tchibota, Silvère Ganvoula, Phitzgerald Mbaka, Miangué Senna
Domestic players still with clubs:
Junior Mouzita Makiessé, Kader Bidimbou, Percy Akoli, Wisdom Babele (all AC Léopards)
Le Roy is expected to make further reductions as the tournament draws closer. The CHAN kicks off later this year, and Congo will be aiming for a strong showing under a coach who knows African football inside out.
