Bordeaux Captain Lamine Sané Reflects on Disappointing Loss to Lille in Europe Race
Bordeaux’s hopes of securing a European spot took a significant blow on Sunday after a 2-0 defeat to Lille in the 33rd matchday of Ligue 1. The Girondins were unable to capitalize on several opportunities, as goals from Traoré and Roux sealed the win for the Dogues, leaving Bordeaux further adrift in the race for Europe.
Lamine Sané, Bordeaux’s captain, was visibly disappointed following the match but remained proud of his team’s effort. Speaking to BeIN Sports, Sané acknowledged the missed chances that have plagued the team all season. “Yes, unfortunately, like all season long, we had quite a few opportunities,” he said. “We missed another chance to move up the table. But today, we came up against a good Lille team.”
Bordeaux conceded an unfortunate goal in the first half, and although they came out with renewed ambition in the second, they were unable to break down Lille’s defense. “In the second half, we came back with different ambitions. But there you go, I can say that I’m proud of my teammates because we tried to play until the end, we created chances, but today the football gods decided that we lost,” Sané reflected.
Despite the defeat, the captain emphasized the team’s resilience and commitment to the cause, expressing pride in their determination to fight until the final whistle. “I’m proud of my teammates; we tried to do everything we could to win this match,” he concluded.
With the loss, Bordeaux’s European ambitions now hang by a thread, as they will need to find consistency in their remaining fixtures to keep their hopes alive for next season’s continental competitions.
