Egypt: Zamalek SC abandons Mohamed Fathy signing following technical review

Zamalek SC has opted against finalising the signing of Mohamed Fathy, despite having already secured the player’s initial agreement.

The decision was taken following an internal review led by the club’s sporting director, John Edward, who raised concerns over the midfielder’s suitability for the squad’s long-term vision.

Fathy, whose contract with Al-Ahly Bank expired at the end of the 2024/25 season, had been widely expected to join Zamalek on a free transfer.

His signature had been facilitated by former planning committee member Ahmed Hossam “Mido,” with negotiations reportedly reaching an advanced stage earlier this summer.

However, sources close to Zamalek have confirmed that Edward advised the club’s hierarchy to pull out of the deal, citing concerns over both the 31-year-old’s technical level and his age.

The recommendation aligns with Zamalek’s current recruitment policy, which prioritises younger talents capable of contributing to the team’s project over the coming years.

“John Edward expressed reservations about the player’s technical level, as well as his advanced age,” a source told Al-Masry Al-Youm. “Zamalek’s sporting director has decided that future signings should focus on youth to ensure long-term benefits for the club.”

Fathy, a seasoned midfielder, had been viewed by some within the club as a potential short-term addition to bolster the squad’s depth.

Yet with the White Knights now turning their focus towards a more youth-oriented recruitment model, the opportunity appears to have closed.

This decision marks a shift in Zamalek’s summer transfer strategy, signalling a more measured and sustainable approach to rebuilding the squad.

The club’s first confirmed signing of the window, Farco striker Ahmed Sherif, exemplifies this new direction.

At 22, Sherif is considered a player for both the present and future, aligning closely with the vision articulated by Edward and the current sporting leadership.

While the reversal on Fathy’s transfer has surprised some supporters, the club believes the move underscores its commitment to long-term success rather than short-term fixes.

With more additions expected in the coming weeks, Zamalek appears poised to reshape its squad with a blend of youthful energy and strategic planning ahead of the new campaign.
