Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has been given the green light to join Senegal’s national team, the Terranga Lions, for AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast.
After concerns about his fitness due to a hamstring injury during the Tottenham vs. Bournemouth game on New Year’s Eve, Sarr has been declared fit following an assessment on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old has also extended his contract with Tottenham until 2030 after an impressive start to the 2023-24 season.
Sarr has played 18 matches in the Premier League this campaign, scoring twice and delivering two assists, which has seen him pivotal in Ange Postecoglu’s side.
Missing key players like Yves Bissouma and Son Heung Min, Tottenham looks forward to Sarr’s collaboration with Iddrisa Gana Gueye and Nampalys Mendy in Senegal’s midfield trio during AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
Sarr’s availability for the tournament is a major boost for the Teranga Lions’ boss Aliou Cisse, ten days before the start of the tournament.
Senegal, the defending champions, are in Group C alongside Cameroon, Guinea, and Gambia in what is termed as the “group of death.”
