AFCON 2015: Final Four Revealed as Title Race Heats Up
The stage is set for the semi-finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, with four nations now just one win away from reaching the grand finale.
Following a dramatic round of quarter-final clashes, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Ghana, and surprise package Equatorial Guinea have emerged as the tournament’s last contenders. Each team brings its own story, ambitions, and hopes of continental glory.
Ivory Coast, led by a star-studded squad, booked their place in the final four with a convincing 3-1 victory over pre-tournament favourites Algeria. Goals from Wilfried Bony and Gervinho powered the Elephants into the semi-finals, reigniting their quest for a second AFCON title.
Their next opponents, DR Congo, produced one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches, staging a stunning comeback to defeat Congo 4-2. The Leopards, who finished third in the 1998 edition, are now eyeing their first final appearance in over four decades.
On the other side of the draw, Ghana continued their impressive run by cruising past Guinea with a 3-0 win. The Black Stars, four-time champions, are once again among the favourites, seeking to end a 33-year title drought.
Their opponents will be none other than Equatorial Guinea — the tournament’s unexpected story. The hosts defied the odds to eliminate Tunisia 2-1 after extra time in a controversial and dramatic encounter. With home support behind them, the Nzalang Nacional are dreaming of what would be a historic triumph.
Ahead of the semi-finals, more than 26,700 fans took part in an online poll — one vote per IP address — to pick their tournament favourite. Algeria emerged as the overwhelming choice. But as the competition has shown, favourites can fall, and surprises are always just one match away.
Now, with the semi-finalists confirmed, the question remains: who truly deserves to lift the trophy?
Will it be the mighty Elephants of Ivory Coast? The resilient Leopards of DR Congo? The determined Black Stars of Ghana? Or will Equatorial Guinea continue their fairytale run?
The fans will have their say — and the players will have their moment.
