Anzhi Makhachkala has claimed the top spot in the Russian football championship after winning their match against Volga Nizhny Novgorod with a score of 2-1. The club, owned by Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov, saw goals from Samuel Eto’o and Lacina Traoré, securing their position as leaders in the league.
In the match, just before halftime, Ivorian Lacina Touré set up captain Samuel Eto’o for the opening goal, marking Eto’o’s sixth goal in nine matches. Although Volga Nizhny Novgorod equalized in the 52nd minute, Anzhi regained the lead eight minutes later with a well-executed play involving Boussoufa, Eto’o, and Traoré. The Cameroonian striker, Traoré, scored the second goal for Anzhi.
This victory propels Anzhi Makhachkala to the top of the championship table for the first time this season, with 23 points from ten matches and only one defeat. With 21 points, CSKA Moscow, previously leading, now drops to the second position after being defeated by Dynamo with a score of 0-2.
