Kevin Constant: “It’s My First AFCON and I Want to Make It Count”
Just hours before kick-off in Guinea’s Group D opener against Ivory Coast in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Kevin Constant spoke candidly to RFI about his journey to this moment and what it means for him.
The former AC Milan midfielder, now playing for Trabzonspor, is set to make his debut at the AFCON after years of being sidelined for various reasons, including administrative and personal issues.
“It’s true that I could have played three AFCONs,” he admitted. “This is only the first. So I really want to have a good CAN. It’s very important for me, especially since I have an important role within the team. It’s quite exciting.”
Kevin Constant also addressed his previously strained relationship with the Guinean national team and the challenges faced by the Syli National:
“The relationships I had with some of my teammates, the tensions, the lack of supervision, the poor working conditions—all of that pushed me to stop coming. But those problems have been resolved.”
While acknowledging the organizational difficulties often present in African football, Constant stressed that things are now on the right track and he’s ready to contribute fully.
“There are no major problems anymore. And after all, it’s part of African football to have some organizational issues.”
Now a key figure in Michel Dussuyer’s side, Kevin Constant is eager to help Guinea make a strong impression in a group that also includes Ivory Coast, Mali, and Cameroon.
Guinea will take on Ivory Coast today at 4 p.m. GMT in Malabo.
