Kombouaré Warns Promising Wylan Cyprien: Talent Isn’t Everything
At just 19 years old, Wylan Cyprien has already made a mark in Ligue 1, featuring in 16 matches and scoring twice for RC Lens this season. But while the young midfielder’s potential is undeniable, his coach Antoine Kombouaré is urging caution — and maturity.
In an interview with L’Équipe, Kombouaré delivered a candid assessment of Cyprien’s strengths… and weaknesses.
“He’s capable of defending, but also of going forward, where he can make use of his powerful shot and improve his stats,” the Lens boss explained. “He’s the youngster I’m keeping a close eye on. Because he’s never far from doing something stupid.”
Kombouaré didn’t shy away from highlighting areas of concern either, particularly regarding Cyprien’s discipline and off-field habits.
“He needs to build physical strength,” he added, “but above all, he must watch his lifestyle if he wants to take the next step.”
With such a public vote of confidence — and a clear warning — the ball is now in Cyprien’s court. If he takes the advice to heart, he could soon become one of Ligue 1’s breakout stars.
