Yaya Touré Names Top Contenders for AFCON 2015 Glory
As the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaches, debate is heating up over who will claim the continent’s most prestigious football title. With reigning champions Nigeria failing to qualify, a new winner is set to be crowned when the tournament kicks off in Equatorial Guinea on January 17, running through February 8.
One of the favorites, Ivory Coast, enters the competition with high expectations, boasting a squad packed with experience and star power. However, team captain Yaya Touré is urging caution, pointing out that several other teams are strong contenders for the title.

Touré, a four-time African Player of the Year, is no stranger to the intensity of this competition. Despite their wealth of talent, Ivory Coast have often fallen short at the final hurdle, most notably in 2006 and 2012, when they lost both finals on penalties.
The Elephants have been drawn into a tough Group D, which many observers have dubbed the “group of death”. They will face Cameroon, Mali, and Guinea—three sides with solid pedigree and capable of springing surprises.
Among the other teams Yaya Touré mentioned, Algeria come into the tournament with momentum from an impressive 2014 World Cup run, where they reached the Round of 16 and pushed eventual champions Germany into extra time. Ghana, perennial AFCON contenders, are seeking their first title since 1982, while Senegal boasts a physically imposing squad with several players in top European leagues.
With Nigeria absent, the field is wide open. Touré’s measured confidence reflects Ivory Coast’s awareness of the challenge ahead.
