[Exclusive] CAN 2015: Gervinho – “Prove the Doubters Wrong”

Gervinho: “We’re Going to the Africa Cup of Nations to Win It”

With just days remaining before preparations begin for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast forward Gervinho has delivered a clear message: the Elephants are heading to Equatorial Guinea to win.

In an exclusive interview from Abidjan, the AS Roma attacker—one of the Ivorian squad’s most influential figures—spoke with calm determination about his side’s ambitions and the mindset inside the dressing room.

“We’re going into it with a lot of motivation,” said Gervinho. “There are only two days left before the preparation camp. That means we’re already thinking about the competition.”

Despite a stuttering qualification campaign and the absence of key veterans such as Didier Drogba and Arthur Boka, Gervinho insists the team is united in its objective: lifting the trophy.

“In Côte d’Ivoire, we don’t go to the Africa Cup of Nations just to participate. Whatever the challenges we faced during the qualifiers, we remain Côte d’Ivoire. The goal is clear: win the Cup.”

Without the leadership of long-time captain Didier Drogba, who retired from international football after the 2014 World Cup, Gervinho and other senior players are expected to shoulder more responsibility. But rather than feel burdened, the 27-year-old views this as a natural progression.

“They’re not here physically, but their presence is still felt. Those who’ve retired continue to support the team. We’ll carry that spirit with us in Equatorial Guinea.”

The Elephants, drawn in a competitive group, will be looking to end their long wait for a second continental title—their only triumph dating back to 1992. Expectations may be lower this time, but Gervinho believes that could work in their favour.

“We’re more relaxed when people don’t count on us,” he said. “We’re not starting as favourites, but we’re going to try to prove the doubters wrong.”

Asked about a recent meeting between senior players and Ivorian FA president Sidy Diallo, Gervinho remained tight-lipped but hinted at constructive dialogue.

“We talked about football, the Africa Cup, and certain internal matters. It’s part of our preparation. But everything said stays between us.”

As Ivory Coast prepares to enter the 2015 tournament without some of its golden generation, all eyes will be on players like Gervinho to lead the way. And if his words are anything to go by, the Elephants are not heading to Malabo to simply make up the numbers—they are aiming for the top.
