George Weah Elected to Liberian Senate with Landslide Victory
Former football star George Weah has taken a significant step in his political career by winning a seat in Liberia’s Senate, the country’s electoral commission announced on Saturday evening.
Weah, who famously won the Ballon d’Or in 1995, secured an overwhelming 78% of the vote in the December 16 elections. He will represent Montserrado County, which includes the capital, Monrovia, under the banner of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).
His main opponent was Robert Sirleaf, the son of sitting President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Weah’s victory marks a major political comeback after narrowly losing the 2005 presidential election to Johnson Sirleaf.
Best known globally for his achievements on the pitch with clubs like Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Marseille, Weah has long sought to convert his popularity into political leadership. With this Senate win, the former captain of the Liberian national team, the Lone Stars, solidifies his position as a leading figure in national politics.
The win has fueled speculation that Weah may once again seek the presidency in 2017.
