Divock Origi Struggles to Find Form at Lille Amid Fan Frustration

Just months after enjoying a breakout season with Lille and a standout performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup for Belgium, Divock Origi is facing one of the toughest periods of his young career.
The 19-year-old striker, signed by Liverpool last summer and immediately loaned back to Lille, has found goals and confidence hard to come by this season. His struggles reached a low point on Thursday night in the UEFA Europa League, when he missed a penalty — prompting loud boos from his own supporters at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
According to La Voix du Nord, Origi was so affected by the reaction that he requested to speak to the press to explain himself. However, the club reportedly denied him the opportunity, aiming perhaps to protect the young striker from further pressure.
In the dressing room, though, support came from his captain. Veteran midfielder Rio Mavuba offered words of encouragement and perspective.
“I told him that great players are booed at big clubs,” Mavuba said. “They all go through periods where they don’t score. He’s having doubts right now, but we know we’ll need him.”
Origi’s rapid rise last season — including five goals in Ligue 1 and an eye-catching run at the World Cup, where he scored a crucial goal for Belgium — made him one of Europe’s most promising young forwards. But his current form has seen him struggle for consistency, leaving both fans and club officials hoping for a turnaround.
While criticism from supporters is nothing new in football, especially in times of poor results, it is a stark contrast to the praise Origi was showered with just a few months ago. The pressure of high expectations, a hefty transfer to a Premier League giant, and a team in poor form have all contributed to a difficult campaign.
Still just a teenager, Origi has time to rediscover his best self. But for now, he finds himself in need of confidence, goals — and perhaps a little patience from the fans who once cheered him.
