The decision of Dutch striker Robin van Persie to sign with arch-rivals Manchester United did not sit well with fans of the London club, Arsenal. The news, confirmed by Arsenal’s manager, Arsène Wenger, on Wednesday evening, left many fans in disbelief.

The announcement of van Persie’s departure sparked strong reactions among Arsenal supporters, with some expressing their indignation and anger in various ways. There were reports of van Persie’s jerseys being burned, torn, and even trampled by fans, with photos of these actions circulating on the internet and social media.

Van Persie had communicated his decision not to extend his contract with Arsenal on July 4 through his official website. In his statement, he acknowledged that fans had the right to disagree with his views, and he respected their opinions. As the Premier League’s top scorer and Arsenal’s key player, his departure posed a challenging dilemma for the club — whether to retain him for another year and risk losing him on a free transfer or to sell him during the summer transfer window to secure a significant transfer fee.

On Wednesday, Manchester United reached an agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of the Dutch striker, with the transaction valued at around 30 million euros. Van Persie’s move to a direct rival intensified the emotions among Arsenal fans, further highlighting the complexities of player transfers in the world of football.
