French Ligue 1 giants Marseille are facing a stumbling block for the permanent acquisition of Algeria international Ismaël Bennacer.
Joining on loan from AC Milan in January, Bennacer enjoyed a strong start to life at Marseille, proving a valuable element in their midfield. However, as the season progressed, his influence waned. The Algeria international was not helped by a string of minor injuries that hindered his fitness levels.
The 27-year-old made 12 appearances in the French Ligue 1 campaign, providing two assists across the period.
Nonetheless, he did start eight times for Marseille at the back end of the season. Whilst the club’s hierarchy has not been sufficiently convinced to activate the €12m buy option included in the deal last January, Marseille are keen to keep the midfielder.
However, Marseille do not wish to keep him at any cost. There is talk of another loan spell for the upcoming season, one in which Marseille will compete in the UEFA Champions League.
A permanent move could also be on the cards. However, Marseille will try to negotiate with AC Milan and a compromise on salary may have to be found.
Meanwhile, Bennacer’s salary demands are an issue that needs to be resolved if the Algerian is to remain at Olympique de Marseille next season.
