2015 Africa Cup of Nations Without a Host: Equatorial Guinea Emerging as Favorite
The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) remains without a host following Morocco’s official withdrawal, citing health risks linked to the Ebola virus. The North African country had asked for the tournament to be postponed — a request firmly rejected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“Morocco has no intention of giving in to CAF’s demands because the health risk is too great,” stated Sports Minister Mohamed Ouzzine.
CAF responded swiftly by disqualifying Morocco from the 30th edition of the tournament. In a press release issued on Tuesday, the body confirmed:
“The 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations will not take place in Morocco.”
Suspense Around New Host Country
While fans and federations expected an immediate announcement of the new host, CAF opted to delay, stating that several applications had been received as of November 10.
“These applications are under review, and the Executive Committee will finalize the selection of the successful national association shortly,” CAF added.
Is Equatorial Guinea the Front-Runner?
Rumors are gaining ground, especially after MBC 2, an Egyptian TV channel known for credible insider information, reported that Equatorial Guinea is poised to host the 2015 edition. The report suggests that an inspection mission will be dispatched soon to evaluate infrastructure and readiness.
Constant Omari Sélémani, a member of the CAF Executive Committee, hinted at the level of interest:
“More than four countries have applied to organize CAN 2015. You will be informed as soon as the Commission has done its work.”
Equatorial Guinea, despite its small size and limited resources, co-hosted the 2012 AFCON with Gabon and may now be called upon to rescue CAF’s flagship competition in record time.
With the tournament dates unchanged and the draw for the final phase still pending, all eyes are now on CAF’s next move as time rapidly runs out.
