French football legend Zinedine Zidane has heaped praise on Rayan Cherki, Manchester City’s latest acquisition from Olympique Lyonnais, revealing his admiration for the young midfielder’s style of play.

Cherki, who is of Algerian descent through his father and has strong North African roots, completed his move to the English club last week after a breakout campaign in Ligue 1.

His dazzling performances earned him the inaugural award for the league’s best dribbler, as well as recognition as the top assist provider with 11 assists and eight goals.

Zidane, speaking to Téléfoot, commended the 21-year-old’s technical flair and creativity, particularly highlighting the unique quality of Cherki’s dribbling, which has drawn comparisons to elite playmakers in European football.

“It’s good that he won, because he had a great season and he deserves it,” Zidane said, referring to the new Ligue 1 dribbling accolade.

The former Real Madrid coach, himself celebrated for his grace and control in midfield during his playing days, rarely singles out individuals publicly.

His endorsement is likely to add further momentum to the hype surrounding Cherki as he prepares to begin life under Pep Guardiola in England.

Cherki’s progression from Lyon’s academy to becoming one of Europe’s most exciting young talents has been closely watched in France.

Now, with Zidane’s seal of approval and a high-profile move to the Premier League, expectations are soaring for the Franco-Algerian star to flourish on a bigger stage.
