Semassi de Sokodé Crowned Togo Champions Amid Controversial Final Day
Semassi FC of Sokodé, the most decorated club in Togo, clinched their 10th national title on Sunday, wrapping up the 2013–2014 Togolese First Division season in dramatic and controversial fashion.
The title win came after a chaotic final day, as five clubs boycotted their matches in protest against the Togolese Football Federation, citing unresolved demands. As a result, only two of the six scheduled games were played.
Despite the turmoil, Semassi seized their moment at the Lomé Municipal Stadium, where their traveling fans created a festive atmosphere. A single goal from Maman Zougou Djawadou against Agaza — already safe from relegation — was enough to seal the title. Semassi ended the season with:
✅ 11 wins
➖ 9 losses
❌ 2 defeats
📊 42 points
In the other match played, Unisport beat AS Togo Port 1-0, securing their survival in the top flight.
Final Standings Highlights
🥇 Champions: Semassi (42 pts) – will represent Togo in the CAF Champions League
🥈 Anges FC (37 pts)
🥉 AS Togo Port (35 pts)
⬇️ Relegated: Gbikinti (25 pts) and AS Douanes (also suspended for 2 matches)
Semassi’s triumph comes not only as a celebration of sporting success but also amid a broader crisis of governance within Togolese football. Nonetheless, the “Warriors of Tchaoudjo” reaffirm their legacy as giants of Togolese football.
