Nicolas Anelka was the difference-maker on Sunday as Mumbai City FC claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League. The former France international struck just before halftime with a beautifully taken free-kick, sealing all three points for his side.
Anelka, who had endured a tough opening match with a heavy 5-1 loss to Chennaiyin FC, responded in style. Leading the Mumbai attack, the veteran striker displayed his class with a pinpoint strike that beat Kerala’s defense and left goalkeeper Cédric Hengbart helpless.
He nearly doubled the advantage late in the match, but a sharp save from Brazilian keeper André Moritz kept Kerala in the contest. Nevertheless, the single goal was enough for Mumbai to bounce back and secure a much-needed victory.
