Togo: Candidates Call on FIFA to Postpone FTF Extraordinary Congress

With the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) due to renew its executive board this year, tensions are mounting ahead of a planned extraordinary congress intended to adopt the body’s new electoral code. However, this congress, scheduled for November 4, is drawing criticism from declared presidential candidates and stakeholders.

In a letter addressed to FIFA, candidates Kossi Adjodo and Wattara Amadou, along with several club leaders, denounced the lack of transparency and irregularities in the process leading up to the congress.

“The date of November 4 was initially set for the elections. Then, without any explanation, a new letter reclassified it as an ‘extraordinary congress’ to elect the members of the electoral commission,” the letter reads.

The group accuses the outgoing FTF board of failing to follow FIFA’s standard electoral practices. They argue that:

The Electoral and Appeals Commissions should have been established a year ago.

No ordinary congress has taken place in four years, which has created ambiguity about:

The updated list of eligible FTF members

The identity of the voting delegates

As a result, the signatories have formally requested FIFA to intervene and postpone the November 4 congress, which was to be held at the INFA center in Tové.

The outcome of FIFA’s response could have major implications for the future of Togolese football governance and the credibility of the upcoming FTF elections.
