Bakary Koné Responds to Critics: “I Accept the Criticism, But I Keep Working”

Under fire after a costly mistake in Lyon’s recent 1-1 draw with Nantes, Burkina Faso international Bakary Koné has responded calmly to mounting criticism over his form.
Once labelled a “key player” by Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas, Koné has struggled to maintain consistency in recent seasons. His error at the Stade de la Beaujoire, conceding a needless penalty, reignited concerns over his reliability in defence—a recurring theme for the 26-year-old since his arrival from Guingamp in 2011.
Despite the scrutiny, Koné remains composed and focused on self-improvement.
“You never stop improving in football. I work. Even when I go through difficult times, I continue to work,” he told Le Progrès. “It’s not just the grades. If you stop at the grades, you’re not working. I accept criticism. We know how it works.”
The centre-back also acknowledged that the relationship between players and the media can be a double-edged sword:
“A journalist can also get along well with a player. But the journalist does his job. If he gives me a zero, no problem, it’s up to me to continue. I don’t need to respond. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating to see that you’re the target.”
Despite being at the centre of transfer rumours in recent windows, Koné is keeping his options open regarding his future at Lyon.
“When OL came forward with a good offer, I accepted. The world of football is also the world of business, that’s how it is,” he explained. “I know that you can’t refuse certain things. And then, if there are good offers, there won’t be a problem. I can either continue the adventure with OL or leave.”
As for a contract extension?
“I’m not thinking about that. I’m continuing to work. When the offers come, we’ll see.”
For now, Koné remains focused on reclaiming his form and helping Lyon stay competitive in Ligue 1. But with patience wearing thin among fans and pundits, the coming weeks could prove decisive for his future at the club.
