Alex Song Explains Decision to Join West Ham After Barcelona Exit
After a difficult spell at FC Barcelona, Cameroonian midfielder Alex Song has opted for a fresh start in the Premier League. Pushed out of the squad by new Barça manager Luis Enrique, Song made the move to West Ham United, returning to English football two years after leaving Arsenal.
In an interview with The Sun, Song clarified his decision to join a club outside the Champions League spotlight.
“It was very easy. I wanted to come back to the Premier League and when the manager spoke to me, I was very happy to be part of the project,” said the former Cameroon international. “Some people said to me, ‘Why don’t you go and play for a club in the Champions League?’ I played in the Champions League for nine years. For me, it didn’t matter.”
Song, who was linked with moves to both Manchester United and a return to Arsenal, ultimately prioritized regular playing time and a clear role at West Ham over European competition.
“This year, I just want to play for West Ham, do my best, and we’ll see what happens.”
Still only in his late 20s at the time of the transfer, Song brings valuable experience and a physical presence to West Ham’s midfield, hoping to rejuvenate his career under manager Sam Allardyce.
