Pep Guardiola waxes lyrical about Lamine Yamal but insists Lionel Messi remains unmatched

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lauded young Spanish star Lamine Yamal for his remarkable talent and maturity on the pitch, but firmly stated that no player can be compared to Lionel Messi.

Yamal, a Spanish international of Moroccan heritage, delivered a dazzling performance by netting twice in Spain’s thrilling 5-4 victory over France, securing a spot in the UEFA Nations League final.

Speaking to DAZN, Guardiola expressed admiration for the 17-year-old’s football intelligence and composure far beyond his years.

“What they say about Yamal is true and amazing. Players usually reach this maturity at 24 or 25. Sometimes it seems that a player with this talent should be involved in every attack.”

Describing Yamal’s style, Guardiola added: “In some attacks, he touches the ball once, rests for three minutes, then touches it again with a simple move or a pass, and then he can win the match for his team. His understanding of the game is amazing, and Barcelona is very lucky to have a boy with that perspective.”

However, despite the glowing praise, Guardiola drew a clear line when it came to comparisons with Messi, the Argentine icon he coached at Barcelona from 2008 to 2012.

“I wouldn’t say that Yamal is like Leo. I’m sorry, but Leo will never be repeated. For me, no one in the world can compare to the Argentinian, it’s impossible,” he said.

Under Guardiola’s guidance, Messi led Barcelona to numerous titles, including three La Liga crowns and two UEFA Champions League trophies.

As for Yamal, his recent performances have sparked speculation that he could be a frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, as excitement around the teenage sensation continues to grow.
