Newly appointed Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro has reportedly banned the club’s sporting director, Mohamed Youssef, just days after overseeing his first training session.

The 49-year-old Spanish manager joined the Egyptian side from South African side, Orlando Pirates, on a two-year deal with an option of renewal.

Riveiro enjoyed a successful tenure with the Buccaneers, securing five trophies, namely, three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup titles, which cemented his reputation as a respected and capable tactician.

The Vigo-born manager was officially unveiled as Al Ahly’s new head coach last week Thursday, as confirmed by AfricaSoccer.com.

However, tension have reportedly surfaced within the club. According to Elwatannews, tension developed between Riveiro and Youssef after the latter allegedly discussed technical matters directly with players without the coach’s knowledge.

The reports added that Riveiro has requested Youssef refrain from attending technical meetings and emphasised the importance of maintaining clear lines of communication, particularly when it comes to tactical instructions for the players.

Riveiro is currently preparing Al Ahly for the highly anticipated 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where they are set to face Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Brazilian outfit Palmeiras, and Portuguese giants FC Porto.
