Chelsea’s Didier Drogba Sidelined Following Ankle Injury
Didier Drogba is set to miss the start of the Premier League season after sustaining an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly against Hungarian side Ferencvaros.
The Ivorian striker, who recently announced his retirement from international football, picked up a sprained ankle during Chelsea’s 2-1 win on Sunday. The club expects him to be out of action for around two weeks, ruling him out of Monday’s league opener against Burnley.
Drogba, 36, returned to Chelsea this summer on a one-year deal after spells at Shanghai Shenhua and Galatasaray. The Ivorian icon previously spent eight seasons with the Blues, scoring over 150 goals and winning the Champions League in 2012.
Speaking to Canal+ about his decision to step away from international duty, Drogba said: “It’s the right time to stop, to make way for the youngsters and help build for the future. Being captain of my country has been a great source of pride.”
He retires as Ivory Coast’s all-time leading scorer with 66 goals in 106 appearances.
