Hatem Ben Arfa Linked with Potential Return to Olympique Lyonnais
After a difficult 2013-2014 season at Newcastle United, Hatem Ben Arfa appears to have fallen out of favour with the Magpies’ management. The French international has been omitted from the squad on multiple occasions during pre-season preparations, fueling speculation about his future. Recent reports suggest a potential return to his former club Olympique Lyonnais could be on the horizon.
Ben Arfa’s agent, Michel Ouazine, spoke to Footmercato about the possibility, describing it as a natural and attractive option for the talented midfielder.
“It was an idea that came from a discussion with Hatem about French clubs. We talked about Lyon and its great project. Contrary to popular belief, Lyon is not a dying club and has ambitions comparable to Arsenal’s,” Ouazine said.
He added, “Hatem told me that Lyon is his training club and favourite club. He has a strong relationship with Bernard Lacombe and enormous respect for what President Jean-Michel Aulas has achieved.”
According to the agent, Lyon would likely welcome Ben Arfa’s return, which he likened to “a child coming home.”
“With the new stadium project, there’s a positive future ahead. The squad is young, and Hatem is a fierce competitor, just like President Aulas. Though still young, Hatem has extensive experience in high-pressure matches,” Ouazine explained.
He also highlighted the potential on-field benefits of pairing Ben Arfa with fellow playmaker Yoann Gourcuff, describing the prospect as “interesting” and even “enchanting.”
However, Ouazine acknowledged that financial considerations remain a significant factor, noting that Ben Arfa is still contracted to Newcastle until 2015.
As the 2014-2015 season approaches, the player’s situation remains fluid. A return to Lyon could provide Ben Arfa with an opportunity to revive his career and contribute to a club with which he shares deep ties.
