Romelu Lukaku’s Atletico Madrid Hopes Fade; Bundesliga Beckons
Once linked with Atletico Madrid as a possible replacement for Diego Costa, Romelu Lukaku’s chances of joining the Spanish side are now fading. Atletico has reportedly chosen Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic instead.
Still a Chelsea player but without appearances since 2012, Lukaku—who spent recent seasons on loan at West Brom and Everton—is eager for a permanent move to settle his career. Despite strong performances at Everton, he lacks the full confidence of Chelsea’s José Mourinho.
Among several offers, VfL Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga has shown strong interest. Negotiations between Chelsea and Wolfsburg are said to be well underway, with a transfer fee around €22 million being discussed. Lukaku is favored by Wolfsburg’s technical director Klaus Allofs and is becoming their priority after Real Madrid’s Álvaro Morata moved close to a Juventus deal.
