English-Angolan Angel Gomes says Lille will always be in his heart as he confirms departure

Angel Gomes

England midfielder Angel Gomes has officially announced his departure from French side Lille, bringing an end to a four-year spell with the Ligue 1 outfit.

Gomes, who has Angolan heritage, confirmed via social media that he will not renew his contract with LOSC, which expires at the end of June.

The 24-year-old former Manchester United prospect thanked the club, its fans, and his teammates for what he described as a transformative chapter of his career.

“After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, the time has come to say goodbye,” Gomes wrote.

“This club has been more than just a team: it has been a family, a home and a place that has shaped me both on and off the pitch.”

Gomes joined Lille in 2020 after leaving Manchester United in search of regular first-team football.

He has since developed into a key player at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, contributing both in midfield and attack.

His departure comes at a time when several top European clubs are showing interest in securing his services.

Reports in France suggest Olympique Marseille are leading the race to sign him, having edged ahead of Premier League side West Ham United, who made a pre-contract approach earlier this month.

“To the fans: thank you for your extraordinary support and for believing in me,” he continued. “I have always given everything I had for the shirt and for all of you. Lille will always have a special place in my heart.”

Gomes is expected to be among the most sought-after free agents on the European market as the summer transfer window approaches.
