ivock Origi: Lille’s Rising Star Draws Interest from Kenya

Among the standout young talents emerging from Lille this season, Divock Origi has firmly established himself as the revelation of the year. The 19-year-old striker, born in Kenya but representing Belgium at youth level, has made a strong impression in what is his first full season as a professional.

A key figure in Lille’s youth-driven project, Origi has already featured in 25 Ligue 1 matches this season, including 10 starts, and has scored five crucial goals. His contributions have not gone unnoticed, as the northern French club looks to its academy prospects to secure a sustainable future at the top level of European football.

Origi’s rapid development has also caught the attention of national team selectors. Currently a Belgium U21 international, he is progressing swiftly and is widely seen as a potential future member of the senior Belgian national team, the Red Devils. Though he has yet to receive a call-up from Belgium’s senior coach, Marc Wilmots, his performances suggest it may only be a matter of time.

However, Origi’s international future may not be straightforward. According to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws, the Kenyan Football Federation has expressed interest in convincing the young forward to represent his country of birth, the Harambee Stars. Kenya’s national team, eager to inject fresh talent into their ranks, see Origi as a potential cornerstone for their long-term ambitions.

Despite the approach, Origi’s commitment to Belgium appears firm. Having spent his formative football years in the Belgian system—starting at Genk before joining Lille at 15—he has represented the country at every youth level. His father, Mike Origi, a former Kenyan international himself, has been clear on where his son’s loyalties lie: “There’s no reason to change.”

As the season draws to a close, Origi continues to attract praise for his maturity, versatility, and strong work ethic—traits that have made him one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects. Whether his future lies with Belgium’s Red Devils or elsewhere, one thing is certain: Divock Origi’s journey is only just beginning.
