Benin and Mali Reach Final of Inaugural U-17 President Cup in Togo
Benin and Mali have secured their spots in the final of the first-ever President Cup, an under-17 football tournament hosted in Togo, after an eventful day of semi-final action on Friday.
The most stunning result came as the host nation, Togo, suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to a dominant Malian side in front of a packed crowd at Lomé’s Municipal Stadium. The home team, dubbed the Éperviers Cadets, were overwhelmed from the outset by a clinical Mali team.
Barely a minute into the match, Malian forward Traoré capitalised on a goalkeeper’s error to put his side ahead. Just 14 minutes later, Traoré struck again to double the lead, setting the tone for what would become a one-sided affair. By halftime, Mali had added a third goal, effectively dashing any hopes of a Togolese comeback. The second half saw the Aiglons complete the rout with a fourth goal, sealing a commanding win and a place in the final.
In the day’s earlier semi-final, Benin overcame Nigeria in a dramatic penalty shootout after both sides were deadlocked at 1-1 following extra time. The victory sends the Écureuils Cadets through to the final, setting up an all-West African showdown with Mali.
Before the title decider, the third-place play-off will see Togo attempt to redeem themselves against a resilient Nigerian side.
The final promises to be an exciting contest between two teams who have impressed throughout the tournament. The match will not only determine the champion of this inaugural competition but also spotlight the emerging talents of West African youth football.
