Togo’s Top-Flight Football Set for May 3 Return Amid Minor Dissent
The Togolese Football Federation (FTF) has confirmed May 3 as the official restart date for the national first division football championship, following a meeting held Thursday with representatives of all 12 top-tier clubs at the Federation’s headquarters.
The decision, originally approved by the FTF Executive Board, was reaffirmed during the meeting, where club presidents overwhelmingly supported the proposed start date. However, there was a rare note of dissent from the third vice-president of Sémassi de Sokodé, who called for a preliminary consultation before finalising the schedule. Despite his concerns, the overwhelming consensus among the other 11 clubs suggests the date is unlikely to change.
In line with FTF competition regulations, the season traditionally opens with a match between the reigning first division champions and the champions of the second tier. However, due to the absence of a second division campaign in Togo last season, an exception has been made. The 2024/25 season will instead begin with the defending champions facing Maranatha de Fiokpo in Notsè.
The FTF’s commitment to resuming domestic football comes after a prolonged period of uncertainty and reflects growing momentum to stabilise and promote the local game. Clubs will now begin final preparations as the countdown to the new season officially begins.
