Wolfsburg drop Algerian forward Amoura following training ground incident

Mohamed Amine Amoura was dropped from the starting line-up for Wolfsburg’s 4-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, following a disciplinary sanction imposed after a training ground clash with teammate Joakim Mæhle.

The Algerian forward, who has been one of Wolfsburg’s standout performers this season, was left on the bench after being involved in a heated altercation during a session on Tuesday.

Head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl had already hinted on Thursday that Amoura’s place in the squad was uncertain, and his omission from the starting XI confirmed the disciplinary decision taken by the club.

While fellow Algerian international Ramy Bensebaïni played from the outset for Dortmund and even registered an assist in the one-sided affair, Amoura was limited to just 21 minutes of action.

The decision to start Mæhle instead further underscored the coaching staff’s view of the incident, suggesting that Amoura bore the greater share of responsibility in the dispute.

The club’s move appears to be a clear message to the 25-year-old forward, whose conduct in training was deemed unacceptable.

By leaving him out of a crucial Bundesliga fixture, Wolfsburg management signalled that internal discipline will not be compromised, regardless of a player’s on-field contributions.

Amoura, who hails from Jijel, has been one of Wolfsburg’s most influential attacking players throughout the season. In 28 league appearances, he has recorded 10 goals and 8 assists, consistently providing pace, creativity, and cutting edge in the final third.

His impact has been central to Wolfsburg’s offensive approach, and his absence was felt in the heavy defeat to Dortmund.

With only two Bundesliga matches remaining, attention now turns to whether Amoura can regain his coach’s confidence and return to the starting line-up.

The outcome could also influence his future at the club, especially given that Wolfsburg currently sit 12th in the league table and may not offer the most ambitious platform for a player with his level of performance.

Interest from both English and German clubs is reportedly growing, with the summer transfer window approaching. Amoura’s form has not gone unnoticed, and his disciplinary setback may accelerate external interest in securing his services.

However, how he responds to this internal setback over the next two matches could shape both his standing within the squad and his potential market value ahead of the transfer season.

The final stretch of the Bundesliga campaign will be pivotal not only for Wolfsburg’s hopes of ending the season on a positive note but also for Amoura’s personal and professional trajectory.

Whether he remains in Ralph Hasenhüttl’s long-term plans may depend on how he handles this moment of adversity.

For now, the message from the Wolfsburg camp is clear: discipline takes precedence over form, and no player is exempt.
