Mauritania National Team Arrives in Mauritius Ahead of AFCON Qualifier

Curepipe, Mauritius – After a long journey spanning two continents  Dakar (Senegal) and Dubai (United Arab Emirates)  and multiple stopovers, the Mauritania national football team arrived in Mauritius early Thursday morning ahead of their crucial return leg in the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Mourabitounes touched down at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport at 06:50 UTC, following stopovers in Dakar, Senegal, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The team appeared in high spirits despite the exhaustive travel schedule.

Final Preparations in Curepipe

Upon arrival, the team proceeded directly to Curepipe, Mauritius’ second largest city and the venue for Sunday’s return fixture. The delegation is expected to begin final preparations immediately, with training sessions scheduled to adjust to local conditions and time zones.

Sunday’s match marks a pivotal moment for Mauritania’s AFCON campaign, as they seek to secure qualification for the tournament. The first leg’s outcome places added pressure on both teams, with national pride and continental ambitions at stake.

Funding Controversy Overshadows Travel:

The journey to Mauritius was not without its complications. Prior to departure, there was significant uncertainty surrounding the team’s participation due to financial concerns. The Mauritanian Ministry of Sports had initially declined to fund the team’s travel expenses, casting doubt on the national squad’s ability to make the trip.

The issue sparked criticism and concern among supporters and sports analysts alike. The matter was eventually resolved, allowing the team to proceed with its travel plans, but not without raising broader questions about funding and institutional support for national sports teams.

With their arrival now confirmed, focus turns to Sunday’s showdown in Curepipe. The Mourabitounes are expected to hold tactical briefings and light training sessions in the coming days, as head coach and staff work to fine-tune strategies ahead of the match.

Supporters at home remain hopeful that the team’s determination—evident in both their performance and perseverance in reaching Mauritius—will translate into success on the pitch.

In the first leg, Patrice Neveu’s men won 1-0 .
