Sami Tlemcani is in discussions to extend his contract with AEK Athens, as the Greek club looks to secure the services of the promising Algerian goalkeeper beyond June 2025.

The 20-year-old has emerged as a key figure for the club’s reserve side, impressing with consistent performances despite a challenging season in the Greek second division.

Tlemcani, who previously represented Morocco at youth level before switching allegiance to Algeria, joined AEK Athens from Chelsea with the ambition of establishing himself as a professional at the top level.

While his journey to becoming a first-team regular is still ongoing, his progress in the reserve team has not gone unnoticed.

Currently the first-choice goalkeeper for AEK’s B team, Tlemcani has demonstrated composure, agility, and leadership in a difficult campaign.

Although the reserve side has struggled for results, his individual performances have stood out, earning him recognition within the club and beyond.

His displays have reportedly attracted interest from clubs in both Italy and Switzerland, according to Shoot Africa.

AEK Athens, however, are keen to retain the young shot-stopper and are considering offering him a contract extension before his current deal expires in June next year.

The Greek club sees Tlemcani as a valuable asset for the future, particularly as he continues to develop and gain experience.

Despite his consistent appearances for the reserve team, breaking into the first-team squad will be a significant challenge.

AEK’s senior goalkeeping unit currently includes established names such as Vasilis Barkas and Thomas Strakosha, who bring top-flight and international experience.

If Tlemcani is to stake a claim for a place among the professionals, he will need to compete with this experienced duo.

Nonetheless, the club’s willingness to explore a contract extension signals their belief in Tlemcani’s potential.

His development trajectory suggests he could eventually make the step up, particularly if he continues to perform with the same level of consistency and maturity that he has shown throughout the current season.

Tlemcani’s decision to represent Algeria over Morocco also reflects a long-term vision for his career. Though he has not yet broken into the senior national side, his regular minutes in Greece and ongoing growth could eventually open the door to international recognition. A stable club situation at AEK Athens would further strengthen his case.

For now, the focus remains on his future at the club level. With just over a year remaining on his current deal, the coming months could be decisive.

A new contract would offer Tlemcani security and a platform to continue his development, while also signalling a vote of confidence from a club looking to build for the future.

As AEK Athens prepare for another push in the Champions League play-offs at the senior level, the progress of young talents like Tlemcani in the background will be equally important.

His situation will be closely watched, both by AEK supporters and by clubs across Europe, as the young Algerian goalkeeper considers his next steps in professional football.
