Algeria international Amine Gouiri is in ecstasy after scoring what he described as the ‘greatest goal of his career in the French Ligue 1.
The highly-rated attacker scored a hat-trick to inspire Marseille to a resounding 4-1 victory over Brest on Sunday. One of Goiuri’s goals was a stunner, flicking the ball to shoulder height, before unleashing a bicycle kick into the back of the net.
However, the attacker speaking to the media described the goal as one of the greatest in his career.
“Honestly, I think the bicycle kick is one of the greatest goals of my career. It’s all about control. I lift the ball and then, instinctively, I try the bicycle kick, and it goes in,” said the Algerian international in the mixed zone with Get French Football News in attendance.
“When you see it like that [on the replay], it looks easy, but it’s not easy. I don’t see it going in, I just hear the fans. Afterwards, I went off to celebrate like crazy. It was a magical moment. I’ve tried it before in training, when we play tennis ball, that’s all. But I don’t remember ever trying it in a match, I’m not used to attempting that kind of move.”
Meanwhile, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has eulogized the Algeria international following his exploits in the match.
Gouiri joined Marseille in January to replace Frankfurt striker Elye Wahi in the winter transfer window from Rennes and has since established himself as a key member of the team.
“It really moved me,” said the Marseille manager.
“I’ve always said that Gouiri has a lot of qualities, the qualities of a number 10. I can help him become a goalscorer, a real sniper in the number 9 position. I really liked his overhead kick: it’s a magnificent piece of skill, it thrilled me.”
The 25-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided 5 assists from 30 appearances in the Ligue 1 this season.
