Gabon FA President Pierre Alain Mounguengui appointed CAF 3rd Vice President

President of the Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT), Pierre Alain Mounguengui, has been appointed third vice president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following an executive committee meeting held in Accra on Saturday.

His appointment was announced by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a news conference.

The 67-year-old administrator, a former international referee, has steadily built his profile in football governance, having led FEGAFOOT since 2014.

Re-elected in 2018 and again in 2022, Mounguengui has navigated the structural challenges within Gabonese football while gaining increasing recognition across the continent.

His latest appointment represents a major milestone for both Gabon and Central African football, a region historically underrepresented at the highest levels of the game.

Mounguengui’s elevation to one of CAF’s top leadership positions comes at a crucial moment for Gabonese football, which continues to grapple with issues such as weak infrastructure, internal crises, and the inconsistent organization of its domestic competitions.

His new role is seen as a unique opportunity to strengthen Gabon’s presence on the continental stage, attract greater investment, and promote improved governance practices at home.

Beyond national interests, Mounguengui’s appointment carries broader regional significance. Central African football has often found itself overshadowed by the better-structured and more economically supported footballing nations of West and North Africa.

Mounguengui is now expected to advocate for stronger representation and influence for Central Africa within CAF’s decision-making processes.
