2026 World Cup qualifiers: ‘You fought for the badge’ – Zimbabwe FA president praises team’s resilience against Nigeria

Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Nqobile Magwizi has expressed satisfaction with the country’s national team’s performance in their 1-1 draw against Nigeria, praising their determination and resilience.

The Zimbabwean national team, led by Michael Nees, faced a tough challenge against the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Despite being considered underdogs, the Warriors remained disciplined in their defensive setup for most of the encounter.

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, but Zimbabwe responded swiftly.

Tawada Chidera found the equalizer in the 87th minute, just moments after the team struck the crossbar. The result was a morale booster for Zimbabwe as they continue their World Cup qualification campaign.

Magwizi welcomed the team upon their return on Thursday, March 27, commending both players and the technical staff for their effort.

He emphasized that the result showcased the progress Zimbabwean football is making on the international stage.

“Every player fought for the badge, and this performance gives us confidence as we continue our World Cup qualification journey and preparations for Morocco 2025,” Maqwizi said, as quoted by Pindula.

Despite still sitting at the bottom of the group, Magwizi remains optimistic about their qualification hopes.

However, their chances of directly qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are slim. South Africa would need to suffer at least two defeats, while Zimbabwe must secure maximum points in their remaining matches.
