‘Nwaneri has the right attitude for England call-up’ – Wayne Rooney on Nigeria-eligible youngster

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has thrown his weight behind Arsenal’s rising star Ethan Nwaneri, suggesting the teenager is ready for his first England call-up.

Nwaneri, born to a Nigerian father and English mother, is eligible to represent both Nigeria and England at the international level, adding an intriguing dimension to his burgeoning career.

The 17-year-old midfielder, whose Nigerian heritage traces back to Imo State, has been making waves in Arsenal’s youth setup and recently showcased his talent on the grand stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Nwaneri’s standout performance in Arsenal’s historic 7-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven, where he became the second-youngest Arsenal player to feature in a Champions League knockout stage game, has caught the attention of football pundits.

Rooney, speaking on Amazon Prime following Nwaneri’s goalscoring display against PSV, was unequivocal in his assessment of the young talent.

“I think he is definitely (ready for his first England call-up). Over the last couple of years with England, we’ve seen players getting an opportunity with England who haven’t deserved the opportunity,” said Rooney.

“That’s my opinion. I think Nwaneri, he’s showing he’s got the temperament the right attitude to be in that squad.

“If he keeps doing what he’s doing he’ll have a great chance.”

Nwaneri’s recent performance in the Champions League was particularly noteworthy, as he scored Arsenal’s second goal in their emphatic win.

He has featured for England at youth level but is still eligible for Nigeria at senior level as he has not made an appearance for the Three Lions.
