The 18-year-old Franco-Algerian, who has risen through the club’s youth ranks, committed to a two-and-a-half-year deal on his birthday, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Merah, a product of Lyon’s renowned academy, has consistently played above his age group, demonstrating his rapid development and potential.
Since joining OL in 2016, the right-footed midfielder has impressed with his vision, passing ability, and versatility in the heart of the pitch.
Olympique Lyonnais is very pleased to announce the signing of the first professional contract of its young hopeful Khalis Merah, on this symbolic day of his 18th birthday! The midfielder, trained at OL, has signed until June 30, 2027,” the club announced.
A rising star in Lyon’s academy
Merah has been a standout performer for Lyon’s under-19 team this season, contributing five goals and four assists in 15 matches across all competitions.
His performances have earned him opportunities to train with the club’s reserve team in the French National 3 division, further preparing him for the transition to senior football.
Recognized for his technical ability and intelligence on the ball, Merah is viewed as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder who can dictate play and create chances for his teammates.
His progress has not gone unnoticed, and Lyon’s decision to secure him on a long-term deal reflects their confidence in his potential.
International future: France or Algeria?
While Merah has already represented France at the U16 level, earning two caps, he remains eligible to play for Algeria through his family heritage.
