Chief Executive Officer of Stellenbosch FC chief Rob Bernardi has named Zamalek among the favourites to annex the CAF Confederation Cup title this season.
His comment comes after his outfit were paired against the defending champions of the competition during the draw last week.
Stellenbosch will play host to Zamalek before the reverse fixture at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.
Despite the challenge, Bernardi remains optimistic: “We are ready for this test against a great team. The match will be tough because Zamalek is one of the favorites for the title.”
“They have top players with great experience and know how to win. We will play the first leg at home with full force to keep our chances alive.”
“We preferred other opponents; we didn’t want to face Zamalek in the quarterfinals.” He told Egypt’s Channel One:
“Our club has only been playing in Africa for seven years, while Zamalek is a huge club with a rich history and numerous continental titles.”
The quarterfinals of the Confederations Cup has been scheduled for April 2025.
