Atlanta United fans couldn’t have asked for a better debut from Emmanuel Latte Lath, as the Ivorian striker introduced himself in electric fashion during the club’s 3-2 season-opening victory over CF Montréal.
The highly anticipated signing, who arrived from Middlesbrough for an MLS-record USD 22 million, wasted no time in proving his worth, netting a brace and showcasing the dynamism that made him such a coveted acquisition.
Head coach Ronny Deila praised Latte Lath’s impact, acknowledging that while he may not yet be at full match fitness, his presence on the pitch was undeniable.
“When he’s switched on and he has the legs, he can terrorize a defence,” Deila noted after the game.
That much was evident in the 89 minutes Latte Lath spent on the field, keeping Montréal’s defence on high alert with his speed and instincts.
His first goal came just before halftime, a towering header off a Saba Lobjanidze corner, while his second, a poacher’s finish, capitalized on a spilt save from the opposition keeper.
Teammate Mateusz Klich summed it up best: “He’s dangerous, and he scores goals. That’s exactly what the team needs.”
For Atlanta, Latte Lath’s performance was the perfect start to what they hope will be a prolific season.
