Morocco’s World Cup star Azzedine Ounahi looks increasingly likely to disregard reported transfer interest and remain with French club Marseille beyond next month’s winter window, according to local media sources.
Despite rumours linking the 22-year-old midfielder away half a season into his Marseille career, Ounahi has privately indicated desires to continue at the Stade Velodrome.
Having joined the nine-time Ligue 1 champions from Angers last summer on a five-year contract, Ounahi does not wish his Marseille journey to prove short-lived.
“Azzedine Ounahi should not leave during the winter transfer window despite rumours of a potential sale,” confirmed French outlet La Minute OM, which boasts strong ties with the club.
“He does not want to leave OM during the season.”
Ounahi produced outstanding displays for surprise packages Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar, alerting rivals to his technical qualities and work rate.
With Marseille securing Champions League knockout stage qualification, potential suitors from across Europe’s elite leagues have monitored Ounahi’s situation.
But refusing to entertain a departure so soon after arriving on France’s south coast for a reported €10 million fee, Ounahi remains focused on aiding Marseille domestically.
Currently situated third in Ligue 1 behind dominant Paris Saint-Germain and surprising lens, coach Igor Tudor will rely on Ounahi’s vigour and creativity during a pivotal second half of the campaign.
Securing the club’s first league triumph since 2010 is the priority for player, manager and supporters alike.
