In the wake of Chelsea’s summer acquisition of striker Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal, the Blues appear poised to welcome another promising talent from Senegal. The relatively unknown yet highly touted Pope Daouda Diong, a 17-year-old midfielder hailing from the Football Academy Darou Salam in Dakar, is reportedly on the verge of joining the English giants.

According to renowned football insider Fabrizio Romano, the deal for Diong is nearing completion. However, the young midfielder will have to bide his time until he turns 18 to officially become a Chelsea player.

The anticipated commencement of his residency with the club is earmarked for June 2024. It is likely that Diong will initially undergo development with the reserve team before progressing to the first team.

Diong, standing at an impressive height of 1.90 meters, garnered attention on the international stage representing the Lion Cubs at the recent U17 World Cup in Indonesia.

Despite an early exit in the round of 16 with a penalty shootout loss to France, Diong’s performances stood out. According to Wyscout, he boasted the highest percentage (85.2%) of defensive duels won during the group stage, showcasing his prowess in defensive capabilities.

Photographed at Stamford Bridge during the League Cup quarter-final clash between Chelsea and Newcastle on Tuesday, Diong’s presence suggests a step closer to his association with the club.

Notably, he was accompanied by Kendry Páez, a 16-year-old Ecuadorian international set to join Chelsea upon reaching the eligible age in July 2025.

As Chelsea continues to fortify its ranks with emerging talents, the addition of Diong underscores the club’s commitment to nurturing promising young players for future success.
