Corinthians forward Memphis Depay has been sentenced to a four-month suspended prison term for drunk driving, following a ruling by the Monaco Criminal Court on Tuesday, according to RMC.

The Dutch international of Ghanaian descent, who did not attend the hearing, also received a €9,000 fine and a two-year driving ban in Monaco.

The incident occurred on August 6, 2024, when Depay was stopped by police at 5:38 am while driving his Rolls Royce. Authorities noted that his driving was deemed “risky.”

A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed an alcohol level of 1.01 mg per liter of exhaled air, well above Monaco’s legal limit.

The punishment handed to Depay exceeds the typical penalties for drunk driving in Monaco, which usually include a one-month suspended prison sentence, a €2,000 fine, and a six-month driving ban. His harsher sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense.

Depay, who apologized for his actions at the time of his arrest, has two weeks to appeal the decision.

The forward’s off-field actions come as a setback to his professional career, which has seen him represent top clubs and shine on the international stage for the Netherlands.
