Brentford suffered a disappointing defeat to Newcastle United in the quarter-finals of the English League Cup, falling 3-1 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Newcastle took an early lead in the ninth minute through Sandro Tonali, who added another just before half-time in the 43rd minute.
The Magpies further extended their advantage in the 69th minute when Fabian Schär scored, leaving Brentford with a steep challenge.
Despite the heavy defeat, Brentford managed to get on the scoresheet in the dying moments of the match.
Yoane Wissa, the Congolese international forward, found the net in the 91st minute, reducing the deficit with his tenth goal of the season.
Wissa’s strike, though not enough to prevent elimination, was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult night for the Bees.
Wissa, who has been in strong form this season, now has 10 goals from 16 appearances in all competitions, and has also contributed with an assist.
His goal tally remains one of the standout performances for Brentford this term.
While the loss marked an early exit from the League Cup for Brentford, attention now turns to their upcoming Premier League fixtures.
The two sides will meet again on April 2 in a league encounter, which promises to be another crucial clash for both teams.
For now, Brentford will focus on regrouping following this setback, while Wissa’s individual form continues to be a silver lining for the team.
