CAN 2013 SOUTH AFRICA-ANGOLA (2-0): IGESUND’S WINNING COACHING

The passage describes the improved performance of the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, in their match against Angola after a somewhat disappointing and timid display in their first match. The coach, Gordon Igesund, made strategic changes by incorporating five new players into the starting XI.

From the start of the match, Bafana Bafana displayed a more organized and determined style of play, especially under the pressure of potential elimination if they did not perform well. Despite the threat, Angola showed early signs of being threatening, with Mateus taking a low cross shot in the 3rd minute, which was skillfully deflected by South African goalkeeper Khune, resulting in a corner.

As the first half progressed, Mphela was notably active in the South African offensive, and the team, backed by a supportive crowd of 50,000 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, dominated the game. The breakthrough came at the half-hour mark when Sangweni scored from a free kick, deceiving Angola’s goalkeeper Lama and giving South Africa a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with South Africa maintaining their dominance. In the 62nd minute, Majoro, who had entered the game just four minutes earlier, capitalized on a defensive clearance to score the second goal, extending South Africa’s lead to 2-0. Majoro had another opportunity in the 72nd minute, attempting an instinctive lob that narrowly missed Lama’s goal.

Despite a late header opportunity for Manucho in the 84th minute, Angola struggled to regain momentum, and the match concluded with a 2-0 victory for South Africa. The narrative suggests that the improved performance and determination of Bafana Bafana were key factors in their success against Angola.
