Colombe claims first win of the season as Victoria United holds onto top spot in Elite One
Colombe du Dja secured their first victory of the 2023-24 Elite One season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Dynamo de Douala at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé.
The result, which came on Matchday 3, was a much-needed boost for the Cameroon Cup champions after two consecutive draws.
The match started with Colombe facing an early setback.
Goalkeeper Ikong, standing in for Nfor who was away with the Lions A’ on training camp, made a mistake in the restart that allowed Dynamo captain Momasso to seize the opportunity and put the visitors ahead in the 14th minute.
Despite the early blow, Colombe responded with determination.
Although Dynamo’s goalkeeper Mongo kept the hosts at bay for much of the first half, he was unable to prevent an equalizer in the 40th minute when he mishandled a routine free kick, allowing Ekoto to score.
The second half saw Colombe grow into the game, showing more attacking intent.
Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when captain Randy assisted Edzimbi, who deftly sidestepped Mongo to score the match-winning goal.
Despite a valiant effort from Dynamo, who had remained unbeaten until this point in the season, the scoreline held at 2-1, ensuring Colombe’s first three points of the campaign.
Bamboutos FC also recorded their first victory of the season with a commanding 2-0 win over Aigle Royal du Moungo at the Mbouda Municipal Stadium.
Aigle started brightly, putting pressure on the Bamboutos defense, but goalkeeper Junior Mbandji was in top form, making crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
Bamboutos took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to Patrick Michiyo’s goal, much to the relief of the home supporters.
Aigle continued to press but were unable to break down Bamboutos, and in added time (90+4′), Renzo Azong Amih sealed the victory with a second goal.
This result marked Aigle Royal du Moungo’s first loss of the season.
Meanwhile, Victoria United continued their impressive start to the campaign with a dominant 2-0 victory over Astres de Douala at the Stade Annex in Bépanda.
The win took them to 7 points, keeping them at the top of the Elite One standings.
Victoria United’s Nathan Doualla was the star of the match, scoring both goals, the first in the 19th minute and a second in the 69th.
Despite some late efforts from Astres, including a few chances from Rodrigue Tchatchoua, the visitors could not find a way back into the game, and Victoria United ran out deserving winners.
