Esperance de Tunis secured an impressive 2-0 victory over Egyptian side Pyramids FC in their CAF Champions League group stage clash on Saturday.
The match, held at the Hamadi Agrebi Stadium in Rades, saw the Tunisian giants rise to the top of their group with seven points, leaving Pyramids trailing in second place with four.
Esperance dominated proceedings from the outset, applying consistent offensive pressure despite Pyramids’ early efforts to control the midfield. The hosts made their intentions clear within the opening 10 minutes when Youssef Belaili unleashed a powerful shot that narrowly missed the target.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute as Belaili capitalized on a well-executed move to put Esperance ahead. Moments before halftime, Elias Mokwana doubled their advantage, slotting in a second goal to give the home side a comfortable lead heading into the break.
In the second half, Pyramids sought to regain control, focusing on dominating the midfield and imposing their style of play. However, Esperance’s resolute defense nullified their efforts, denying the visitors any clear opportunities to threaten the goal.
The Tunisian side, on the other hand, continued to test Pyramids’ defense with long-range shots. Substitute Agobello came close with a powerful attempt in the 66th minute, while Mohamed Amin Tougai’s strike in the 81st minute narrowly missed the mark.
Despite creating several chances to extend their lead, Esperance was unable to add a third goal.
After the defeat, Pyramids FC will need to regroup quickly as they aim to reclaim momentum in the next round of matches.
