Orlando Pirates suffered their first league defeat of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season, losing 1-0 to Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium on Sunday. This loss marked the end of an impressive winning streak, dropping the Buccaneers to second place in the league standings.
A lively home crowd saw the hosts dominate early, creating opportunities through Patrick Maswanganyi, Deon Hotto, and Relebohile Mofokeng.
However, the inability to convert chances cost them dearly as Stellenbosch’s Devin Titus capitalized on a counterattack in the 31st minute to put the visitors ahead.
Pirates had a chance to equalize before halftime when Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens handled a back pass, gifting them an indirect free kick inside the box.
Yet, Patrick Maswanganyi’s shot soared over the bar.
In the second half, Stellenbosch tightened their defense, making it difficult for Pirates to break through.
Thalente Mbatha and substitute Kabelo Dlamini came close, with Dlamini striking the crossbar.
Despite their efforts, Pirates failed to find the back of the net, and Stephens made crucial saves to secure Stellenbosch’s victory.
The defeat ends a five-match winning streak for the Soweto Giants, who now look to regroup as the season progresses.
